Target audience

This qualification would be useful for those who are complete beginners and have no prior knowledge of working with payroll.


The above qualification can be studied on a distance learning basis and then assessed by completing a knowledge test and sitting two exams, either at our registered centre or accessing an IAB registered centre.

Course summary

  • Understand and calculate basic pay for different payroll periods.
  • Understand the principles of calculating overtime payments.
  • Know the difference between statutory and voluntary deductions.
  • Understand and calculate PAYE.
  • Understand and calculate National Insurance.
  • Understand the procedures for completing starters and leavers information.
  • Be able to complete a P11, P45 and P46 documentation for employees.
  • Be able to implement permanent changes to rates of pay.
  • Be able to reconcile the payroll and make payments to employees.
  • Maintain the security of data within a computerised environment.
  • Understand organisational procedures for processing payroll in a computerised environment.
